Conversation At A Huddle House:

" I'm meeting somebody," she said answering my question. We sat  in booths opposite of each other in the Huddle House enjoying the contemplation found here late at night. She took a drag off her cigarette and turned her gaze from me to the mirror in front of her. She stared at herself with sad blue eyes picking out every detail of what she was wearing; a sleeveless white sweater over a yellow silk blouse with the cuffs unbuttoned, yellow jeans with a dark brown belt, and black boots. She made a small frown after she had evaluated herself, took another drag and turning forced herself to smile at my staring.

" Anyone special?" I asked immediately regretting the question. A flicker of light beamed in her eyes.
" Yes," she said quietly, the light fading," I've been waiting to meet him for a long time and tonight I am finally going to." I was intrigued to see love in her answer, especially for a man she had yet to meet.
" Who is he?" I asked curiosity aroused.
" Oh, I'm sure no one you know....not yet," she answered with a conspiratorial smile. Then she was quiet again. She checked herself in the mirror and looked at her watch.
" I have to go now," she said getting up. She walked over to me and quickly kissed me on the cheek.  Then before I could reply she walked out the door, across the parking lot, to the edge of the highway. She looked up and down once then looked back at me still in my booth and smiled. She slowly turned back to the highway walked into the path of a speeding truck.
